MacMansions on a Diet Plan

Flash :: New-home buyers responded to the tough times in 2009 by opting for smaller houses, driving down the average size of a house built in the U.S. for the first time in 27 years.

When I saw this headline, I was surprised but also happy about the news.  Building oversize homes was a trend that – like stock market bubbles and waistlines – eventually had to burst.  The ‘American Dream’ had grown to the point that size trumped all.  Bigger was better.   Never mind that we couldn’t really afford to make the payments, upkeep and taxes.  It was somehow all going to pay off in the long run.  So hearing this news also made me think  whether owning a home was actually the right choice for many.  Truth is,  I don’t believe that for many of us , ownership of a  home of any size – let alone a mansion-  is a good idea from a business or personal perspective.  And with the value of homes still below 2007 values, I wonder if we’ve reached a point where sensibility and the rational mind win out.
